The Land Rover Defender can trace its roots back to the original Land Rover Series of 1948 but the company is now finally at work on a replacement truck which should become ready for pre-order in 2015. Our friends and customers keep asking us about the top secret ‘Project Icon’ so here is what we know:

The name ‘Project Icon’ hints at how hard an act to follow the current Defender is, which might explain why Land Rover has not tried to replace the Defender before now. To many people the Defender is Land Rover!

The new Defender, as yet officially unnamed, is likely to be based on the T5 steel chassis used in the current Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport which is favoured for rugged vehicles with a requirement to tow or cross rough terrain. As the owners of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR); Tata Industries, also owns one of the world’s largest steel companies, with expertise in high strength lightweight steel fabrication, Defender lovers can expect some exciting innovation in the new model.

The new vehicle will also support various wheelbase lengths, enabling it to come in a multitude of configurations for domestic, leisure, commercial, and industrial use. The new Defender will remain one of the most versatile utility vehicles ever manufactured. Engines are likely to come from the JLR stable, the mainstay being a version of the TDV6 3.0 that will be further prepared for extreme off road use.

Other than the above, little is known about ‘Project Icon’ and JLR is keeping tight lipped. Rest assured though, both old and new Defenders are certain to remain as hugely popular and sought after as ever! We, for one, are excited to see what those clever Land Rover chaps come up with!
